Corporate Scholarship conditions
The University of Seychelles (UniSey) is the country’s first independent not-for-profit University offering degree and research programmes. The university offers both undergraduate and pre-undergraduate courses starting in October 2009, in the fields of Business Administration and Computing and Information Systems. Other programmes will be introduced in 2010 and thereafter. The University will offer interesting/innovative and relevant programmes that are in tune with the current industry and market trends.
As a bridge between the aspirations of the students and the Human Resource needs of Organizations, UniSey has approached leading organizations to invest in scholarships as a means to recruiting high quality employees.
The Scholarships will be managed by UniSey and the following administrative procedures will apply.
- UniSey will advertise its courses for the year and receive applications, pre-select the applications for suitability for university studies, obtain placement confirmation from the University of London.
- UniSey will seek the assistance of NHRDC to means-test the applicants through the Social Welfare Agency for contribution towards the stipend.
- UniSey will forward list of students accepted by UniSey, and recommend applications for award of private scholarships to the Organization offering scholarship. UniSey will ensure that student applications are routed through the employer for those seeking release from employment or those not routed through the employer where the student is prepared to resign.
- UniSey will provide the organization with the academic performance/results of the sponsored students during the training period.
All requests for scholarships should be submitted on prescribed application form obtainable from UniSey website by July for consideration of approval for scholarship.
Pre-service students whose parental income is less than SR6,000.00 will be awarded full scholarship.
In-service students who are recommended by the employer for training maybe entitled to a proportion of their monthly salary which will be considered as their allowance during the time they spend on the degree programme.
Course completion
UniSey, will on course completion of the course participants:
- Stop stipend on course completion date;
- Request student to report to UniSey within a week of course completion;
- Obtain copy of the student’s thesis/project where applicable;
- Assist the graduate to be placed in employment (pre-service);
Collection of Student Debts
UniSey will keep a list of all students who are awarded scholarship. Should the student fail to complete the programme, UniSey will pursue such students who will be liable to repay their debts. Debts include repayment for contribution towards extension of studies and those students who have signed acknowledgment of debts for their studies.
Bonding
On award of a scholarship students will sign a bonding agreement before they proceed on training as a guarantee that they will successfully complete their studies and work for the Organization or in the country for a specific period of time.
Duration and Cost of Bonding Agreement
The duration of the bonding agreement is based on cost and varies to a maximum of 5 years. In cases of fragmented training the period of training is added but should not exceed 5 years. The cost of the training includes: Tuition fees, stipend and allowances, course materials for local training and proportionate salary for in-service students. Any change in cost of training resulting from extension of studies to be included in a revised bonding agreement and endorsed by the student and guarantor and the bonded period amended accordingly.

Self-financing students or corporate funded courses whereby students receive a salary whilst on training are bonded for the salary paid during the training period.
Criteria for Guarantor
A guarantor should not guarantee more than 2 students at the same time and should meet the following criteria:
- A Seychellois who resides in Seychelles;
- Must be physically and mentally fit (medical certificate to be provided in case of doubt);
- Financially capable to repay the course costs in the event of breach of bond;
- Should not have breached previous bonding agreement;
- Should not himself/herself be a bonded person;
- Should complete and sign the certification of financial soundness and declaration of assets;
- Should sign the bonding agreement in person at UniSey;
- Should inform UniSey of changes in contact address in writing.
Enforcement of the Bonding Agreement
The bonding agreement is effective on signature. The student should start serving the bond at least 2 months upon course completion or on employment date. A register of bonded students will be kept at the University and with NHRDC, indicating name and contact of bonded student, name and contact of guarantor, training programme, venue, course dates-beginning and end, course costs and any other relevant information.
Candidates who fail to honor their bonding agreements are considered as defaulters and will be pursued immediately on breach of bond and legal action to be instituted within the first year of breach in liaison with the Attorney General’s Office.
UniSey Student Database
The database will be updated to reflect the status of students at any time and to provide information to users as required and approved.
Note:
In addition , Organizations may stipulate specific conditions that will vary from one Corporate body to another. These may be gender specific, relate to financial situation of the student., programme specific , Bonding with the organization etc.
